About the guide

Hi, I’m SeoulAslan

I’m from Korea. I lived in Vietnam for six years and in Thailand for a year, so I know what it feels like to arrive somewhere and find that the useful information is in a language you can’t read.

I hike about twice a month. When a guide comes from my own walk, I say so. When it doesn’t, it’s based on official Korean sources.

Songnisan Fall Foliage (2026): Peak Dates and How to Go

Checked Oct 11, 2026

Songnisan National Park (속리산국립공원) in Boeun, North Chungcheong, has a tall summit and a gentle valley, and they peak at different times. The Korea National Arboretum's 2026 forecast has Munjangdae, the summit lookout, peaking on Oct 22 and the valley path Sejo-gil on Oct 26 to 28. The Korea Forest Service's own Sept 22 map says Songnisan peaks on Oct 28, which matches the valley end. Sejo-gil is the beginner pick: 4 km, about 1 hour 20 minutes one way, rated easy by Korea National Park Service (KNPS). A bus from Seoul takes about 3 hours 30 minutes.

When does Songnisan peak in 2026?

Two official forecasts agree here. The Korea National Arboretum (국립수목원) runs a map where you tap a spot and get its forecast peak date. I tapped the Songnisan spots on Oct 4 and again on Oct 5, with the same result. The Korea Forest Service (산림청), on Sept 22, put Songnisan at Oct 28. The Forest Service counts peak as about half the leaves turned. The Arboretum model has a hit rate of about 70%, so read the order more than the exact day.

The summit goes first and the trailhead last, a week apart. That is useful: you can pick your weekend by which end you want.

The easy way: Sejo-gil

Sejo-gil (세조길) runs from the Songnisan Experience Center (체험학습관) up the Dalcheon stream valley to Bokcheonam hermitage: 4 km, about 1 hour 20 minutes one way, rated easy. KNPS says the first 2.1 km to the reservoir takes about 35 minutes and is barrier-free. After that, expect some slopes and stairs, and watch for falling rocks.

  • Experience Center → reservoir: 2.1 km, about 35 minutes, barrier-free.
  • Reservoir → Sesimjeong 세심정: about 1.4 km, 30 minutes.
  • Sesimjeong → Bokcheonam 복천암: 500 m, about 15 minutes.

If you cannot face a summit, this is the one to pick. The barrier-free part is a good turning point.

The summit: Munjangdae Trail

Munjangdae (문장대) is the lookout most visitors come for. KNPS calls the Munjangdae Trail the park's main course: 6.6 km from the Experience Center, about 3 hours 30 minutes one way, rated moderate. The part above Sesimjeong is 3.1 km and about 2 hours 30 minutes, and the last 500 m is steep. KNPS says sneakers are fine, but save your energy for that last stretch.

Songnisan: which weekend works

  • Oct 17–18: too early for the summit. It is forecast for Oct 21 to 22.
  • Oct 24–25: the best middle ground. The summit is just past its peak, the stretch above Sesimjeong peaks Oct 24, and Sesimjeong itself on Oct 26.
  • Oct 31–Nov 1: only for the lower Sejo-gil near the Experience Center, which is forecast for Oct 28.

I'm someone who feels autumn a lot, so I try to go out more at this time of year. If I only go back and forth between home and the office, my head fills with stray thoughts, and getting outside is my own way of getting through it. That is also why I like a path like Sejo-gil: you can do it on a day when you do not have a summit in you.

What visitors say about Beopjusa and the park (2025–2026 reviews)

I haven't been to Songnisan. In October 2026 I read the newest Google Maps reviews of two places: Beopjusa Temple (80 reviews, Oct 2025 to Oct 2026) and Songnisan National Park (70, same period). Together that is 150 reviews, 73 with comments, mostly in Korean (55 of 73), and I've paraphrased them. Ratings are high: 145 of 150 are four or five stars. Very few of these were written in peak foliage weeks, so for the colour itself, rely on the forecast above.

What visitors agree on

  • The temple is calm once you're through the gate. Around 1 in 10 of the Beopjusa comments (4 of 40) describe it as quiet or peaceful. One visitor says the strip of restaurants and amusements between the bus terminal and the main gate feels like another world once you pass the Iljumun gate.
  • The walk in is part of it. Reviewers like the path to Beopjusa, with forest air and a cold stream. Two put the walk at around 20 minutes, one from the car park and one along Sejo-gil. One says there was no entrance fee.
  • It suits a solo visit. One park reviewer calls it good for going alone at your own pace, but says a bottle of water is a must.

What to expect

  • Construction. A reviewer from the winter found the Maitreya statue fenced off for work. Another, about a month ago, says some parts of the temple grounds were still under construction and untidy, so expect some scaffolding.
  • It isn't empty on weekdays. A reviewer in July wrote that hikers, worshippers and tourists filled the temple even at midday on a weekday. Winter visitors, by contrast, found it quiet, and one wrote that it would be better in autumn colour.
  • Munjangdae takes a day. One group of coworkers who climbed it in September 2025 reported 5 to 6 hours in total. "Climb Munjangdae from the north," wrote one Google Maps reviewer in Nov 2025, adding that the views were beautiful.

Nobody in these reviews complains about queues or crowds at the park, though few of them were written in peak colour weeks. If you want the temple quiet in foliage season, a weekday morning is a safer bet than midday.

How to get to Songnisan from Seoul

  1. By bus (KNPS, about 3h 30m): from Central Terminal (Gyeongbu line) 센트럴(경부선)터미널, Dong Seoul Terminal 동서울터미널 or Nambu Terminal 남부터미널, take a bus bound for Songnisan 속리산행, get off at Songnisan Intercity Terminal 속리산시외터미널, and walk to the Experience Center 체험학습관.
  2. By train and bus (KNPS, 3h 30m to 4h): Seoul Station → Daejeon Station by train → city bus to Daejeon Dongbu Intercity Bus Terminal 대전동부시외버스터미널 (about 20 minutes) → a bus bound for Songnisan (about 1h 30m) → the Experience Center.
  3. By car (KNPS, about 3h): Songnisan Experience Center, Beopju-ro 311, Songnisan-myeon, Boeun.

Buy intercity bus tickets on Kobus (kobus.co.kr), which has an English page, or on the Bustago site (bustago.or.kr). Departure times change, so check the day before. A round trip is about 7 hours on the bus, so unless you leave very early, a night in Songni is easier than a day trip. How to book as a foreigner is in our KTX booking guide.

Songnisan: entry, hours and closures

  • Park entry: free. The KNPS fee page lists only parking and camping.
  • Hours: start the Munjangdae route (from Beopjusa) between 4 am and 3 pm until Oct 31, and 5 am to 2 pm from Nov 1.
  • Status: all trails have been open since Sept 1. The park office is at +82-43-542-5267.

Songnisan: rechecking the peak map

The Arboretum map moves with the weather. I will check it again and add what it says. You can check it yourself: open the Arboretum's peak foliage map, zoom to Songnisan and tap the spot you plan to walk.
