Namdaemun Market Guide: Eat, Buy, Closed Days (2026)
Checked Oct 10, 2026

Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) is Seoul's biggest traditional market: about 10,000 shops around Sungnyemun Gate, roughly a 5-minute walk from Hoehyeon Station on Line 4. Opening hours are set shop by shop, and Seoul city's market guides and the Visit Seoul page list Sunday as the closing day, so go Monday to Saturday and eat before 9 pm. Below are 14 Naver Map pins for the alleys, food and shops worth your time, with the hours the market association lists for each.
I'm from Korea, and I've changed money in Namdaemun a few times. This guide is built the way I'd want a foreign friend to use it: Korean names you can paste into Naver Map, and hours copied from the market's own pages. It is the first in a series that goes through Seoul one neighborhood at a time, with one pin list for each.

Is Namdaemun Market open on Sunday?
Many shops are not. Seoul Metropolitan Government's market guides (2019 and 2021) and the Visit Seoul page list the market as closed on Sunday, open Monday to Saturday, with hours depending on the kind of shop. The market association says the same for its 1414 Born Market, a street of about 60 shops in six trades, from produce and side dishes to seafood and butchers: open Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday.
Restaurants differ one by one. On the association's pages, Daedo Sikdang (대도식당) and Namdaemun Charcoal Galbi (남대문숯불갈비) are closed on Sundays, and Dakjinmi Gangwonjip (닭진미 강원집) is closed on the first and third Sundays of the month. If Sunday is your only day, check each pin's hours in Naver Map before you go.
What time does it open and close?
There is no single time. The association's own pages say hours differ by shop. Its alley pages give 06:00 to 21:00 for the kalguksu alley and 03:00 to 21:00 for the galchi alley. The kids' clothing street is listed at 09:30 to 17:00 with a night shift of 22:30 to 05:00, and the page describes it as wholesale before dawn and retail by day. That is trade business, not a night market to wander.

Seoul city's guide gives weekday hours of up to 23:00 depending on the shop. For eating, plan on daytime or early evening: the food alleys above close by 21:00.
How do you get to Namdaemun Market?
Take Line 4 to Hoehyeon Station (회현역) and use exit 5, 6 or 7; the market's site says it is about 5 minutes on foot. If you arrive at Seoul Station by KTX, the same site says it is about 5 minutes on foot from there. Seoul Tourism Organization's 2025 survey of 6,067 foreign visitors found 23.9% had been to Namdaemun, eighth among Seoul places; the numbers are in Where do foreigners actually go in Korea.
The market's gates are numbered, and the association uses those numbers in its directions. The arch of Gate 5 leads to the kalguksu alley, which is on the left a little way in. Gate 2's alley has Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) and Woori Bank branches. Jung-gu office said on July 7, 2026 that it had finished a four-month renovation of the market's lanes, with new signboards on its specialty lanes and overall maps at the four main entrances (Seoul Shinmun, Korean).

Use Naver Map for walking directions; How Koreans find local restaurants explains why. Every pin below is a link that opens that place's name as a search in Naver Map. Search links are used on purpose: saving places in Naver Map needs a Naver account, and a Reddit post from April 2026 describes a new account being suspended right after sign-up (post). That is one report, not a rule.

Hours come from the market association's pages (checked Oct 10, 2026) and, for Seoullo 7017, from Seoul city articles. Six of the pins have addresses on Namdaemun Market 4-gil (남대문시장4길), the main lane through the market.
What should you eat at Namdaemun Market?

- Vegetable hotteok (야채호떡). The association calls it the market's most famous hotteok shop. The dough is made fresh each morning and the filling has onion, chives, carrot and glass noodles. In a May 2026 Reddit thread (thread) one visitor waited about 15 minutes, another says the line is always long, and a third says it is a cart on the street, not inside the market, that does not open on Sundays.
- Kalguksu Alley (칼국수 골목). Counters and long tables on both sides of a narrow lane. The association says that if you order one dish, you often get a small taste of another with it.
- Galchi-jorim Alley (갈치조림 골목). Galchi is hairtail, a long silver fish, braised with radish and chili. The association says the alley has about 40 years of history and lists Jeonju, Jungang, Honam and Huirak restaurants. One Reddit visitor recommends Jungang Galchi (중앙갈치) and another ate at a galchi place on a rainy day.
- Dumplings. Gamegol Son Wangmandu (가메골손왕만두) started in Dongdaemun in 1978 and opened its Namdaemun shop in 2008. Dumplings are made on the first floor, and the second floor has seats for kalguksu and dumplings.
- Buwon Myeonok (부원면옥). Pyongyang-style cold noodles, in the same family for three generations by the association's account.
- Jinjujip (진주집). Oxtail soup and hangover soup, listed as open 24 hours.
- Sunhuine Bindaetteok (순희네 빈대떡). Two menu items, mung bean pancake and meatballs, since 1994. The association says the beans are ground fresh on a millstone and fried to order.

Is it a tourist trap? Visitors disagree. In a May 2026 thread, one commenter who has visited Korea 15+ times said it isn't, because prices aren't inflated for tourists. Another, who lives next to Myeongdong, said young Koreans don't go. Seoul city's 2021 write-up says the market's liveliness is not what it used to be after COVID. Use the pins above and you can judge it yourself. For how to spot real tourist traps, see Tourist-trap food in Seoul.
What can you buy?
The association sorts the market into clothing and fashion goods, accessories, kids' clothing, kitchenware and tableware, imported goods, food, farm and marine products and ginseng, flowers and crafts, and jewelry, watches and cameras. A few streets and shop clusters are worth knowing:
- Souvenir Street (관광기념품거리): traditional fans, hand mirrors, ginseng, laver and other gifts.
- Glasses shops (안경): there is no single glasses street. Shops are spread all over the market, so search 안경 in the Naver Map app and the ones around you all show up. One Reddit visitor in 2023 got a plastic frame with lenses for 70,000 won on a Saturday afternoon, using a photo of his prescription, and picked them up within 30 minutes (thread). That is one person's price, not a guide.
- Camera shops (카메라): old cameras to new ones, clustered on the Sungnyemun Gate side. The association gives Namdaemun-ro 12 as the address.
Do you need cash, and where can you change money?
Bring some cash. A Reddit visitor said so in the May 2026 thread. The association's facilities page lists bank branches and ATMs: near Gates 1 and 2 and inside several buildings.
The same page lists places to change money: the Woori Bank building at Gate 2, Samho Woojoo Jewelry Town, the Free Import building, E-World, Coco Mall, Jeil Mall at Gate 5, and Namsan Sanghoe (남산상회) at the Main Building entrance.
I've also changed money on the street in Namdaemun a few times in the past. Older women sit at certain spots along the lanes. For a small amount they change it on the spot; for a bigger one, they send you somewhere nearby. As I remember, the rate was better than a bank's. These days most people just tap a travel card, so I'd guess this is less common than it was.
One thing to know before you try it. Korean law requires anyone who buys or sells foreign currency as a business to register with the Korea Customs Service first, and doing it without registration is punishable by up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 300 million won (Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, as described in a Korea Customs Service crackdown report). I can't tell you whether a given vendor is registered. For more than pocket money, use a bank or a registered money changer; the Korea Customs Service keeps a list of registered money changers (환전영업자) that you can check online.
A half-day plan
The order follows the street numbers on the association's pages.
- Start at Hoehyeon Station, exit 5 (pin 2).
- Hotteok at Namdaemun-ro 12 (pin 3), then in through the Gate 5 arch.
- On 4-gil, the dumplings, kalguksu alley and Buwon Myeonok sit within a few street numbers of each other (pins 4 to 6, numbers 41-6 to 42-1).
- Walk the souvenir street (pin 10), then lunch in galchi alley at 18-6 (pin 7).
- Shop: glasses (pin 11) or cameras (pin 12).
- Finish at Sungnyemun Gate (pin 13) and the walkway beside it, Seoullo 7017 (pin 14).
What is near Namdaemun that most pin lists skip?
Seoullo 7017 is a former overpass turned walkway beside Seoul Station. Seoul city's articles say it opened on May 20, 2017 and is open every day from 00:00 to 24:00. Its eastern side can be reached from Hoehyeon Station, and a Seoul city article from July 2021 places it next to Sungnyemun.

An updated hours table for the market
The market association's shop-by-shop hours table on its website is dated 2016, so I'll watch for an updated one, and for any hours change after the 2026 lane renovation. Next in the series is Myeongdong, the most visited place on that 2025 survey at 75.8%.
