About the guide

Hi, I’m SeoulAslan

I’m from Korea. I lived in Vietnam for six years and in Thailand for a year, so I know what it feels like to arrive somewhere and find that the useful information is in a language you can’t read.

I hike about twice a month. When a guide comes from my own walk, I say so. When it doesn’t, it’s based on official Korean sources.

Namsan, Myeongdong & Namdaemun in One Day (2026)

Checked Oct 12, 2026

You can fit Namdaemun Market, Myeongdong and Namsan into one day, and the order I'd use is Namdaemun in the morning, Myeongdong at midday, Namsan in the afternoon and N Seoul Tower after dark. The reason is in the hours. Many Namdaemun shops are closed on Sundays and its food alleys close by 21:00, while the Namsan cable car runs until 23:00 and the tower's observatory stays open until 22:30 on weekdays and 23:00 on weekends. The order is my own plan; every hour, fare and distance below comes from the places' own pages, checked on Oct 12, 2026. For one adult, the tower plus a cable car round trip is 44,000 won, before the subway.

I'm from Korea. I've changed money on the street in Namdaemun a few times, from older women who sit along the lanes, and as I remember the rate was better than a bank's. Years ago, in winter, I also went up Namsan by the stairs with my uncle, panting the whole way, and on the way down a small snack shop on the stairs path boiled ramyeon. I remember the ramyeon, not the view. These three places sit close together, and this page puts them in one day and sends you to a longer guide for each stop.

What is the best order for one day?

I'd put the stop with the earliest closing first and the one with the latest closing last. Namdaemun's alleys are on the market association's pages: the kalguksu alley is listed 06:00 to 21:00 and the galchi alley 03:00 to 21:00, and hours otherwise differ shop by shop. Namsan is the opposite. The cable car's service runs 10:00 to 23:00 and the observatory closes at 22:30 or 23:00. So Namsan goes last, and you finish in the dark when the view is the point.

Chart of the suggested order for one day: 1 Namdaemun Market in the morning, many shops shut on Sundays, 2 Myeongdong at midday by Line 4 or the underground passage, 3 Namsan cable car 10:00 to 23:00, 4 N Seoul Tower after dark until 22:30 on weekdays and 23:00 on weekends
The suggested order is my own plan; the hours are from the places' own pages, checked Oct 12, 2026. Chart: Before You Go Korea

Morning: what do you do at Namdaemun Market?

Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) has about 10,172 shops and about 300,000 visitors a day, by the market association's own figures. Take Line 4 to Hoehyeon Station and use exit 5, 6 or 7; the market's site says it's about 5 minutes on foot. Many shops are closed on Sundays, so if your day is a Sunday, read the Sunday note further down before you commit to this order. Bring cash: the market's site lists ATMs and exchange points.

The marker in that photo is the only distance I have between the market and Myeongdong: 600 m from that spot, on a sign photographed in 2018. I found no walking time in an official source, so I won't give one.

The full guide has the food alleys, what to buy, the Sunday closures and a half-day plan: Namdaemun Market: what to eat, what to buy, when it's closed. It also has a list of 14 pins you can open in one go in Naver Map: https://naver.me/5Ne8TpVw.

The guide's half-day plan ends at Sungnyemun Gate, which stands beside the market. That is a natural place to leave for Myeongdong or for bus 01A, which stops at Sungnyemun Gate.

Midday: what do you do in Myeongdong?

Myeongdong (명동) is the shopping and street-food district, and it is also where visitors change money. If you plan to do that, Myeongdong money exchange: rates, rules, passport sets out what a registered shop has to show you: a sign in Korean and another language, its registration certificate and the day's rates. Bring your passport. Rates are not set by law, so read the shop's screen first. The Namdaemun street changers I mentioned above are a different matter: Korean law requires anyone who buys or sells foreign currency as a business to register, and doing it unregistered is punishable by up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 300 million won, so for anything more than pocket money I'd use a registered shop or a bank.

The two districts are linked underground. The Hoehyeon Underground Shopping Center's own guide (Seoul Facilities Corporation) says it lies on the route that links Myeongdong and Namdaemun Market, and that Myeongdong Station Exit 5 leads to the center's Exit 4. Both Hoehyeon and Myeongdong stations are on Line 4, which is the other way to go. I found no walking time for either route.

For eating, I'd decide on the street and check each place's hours on Naver Map: hours differ from stall to stall. To use it, see Naver Map vs Kakao Map vs Google Maps.

Afternoon: how do you get up Namsan?

There are three ways, and each has its own guide.

  • Cable car. The boarding station is at 83 Sopa-ro. The tower's page says it's a 10 to 15 minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 3. It costs 15,000 won round trip or 12,000 won one way for an adult, the ride takes about 3 minutes and tickets are sold on site only. Details in the Namsan Cable Car guide.
  • Bus 01A or 01B. 1,500 won, transportation card only. Both stop at Chungmuro Station Exit 2 and Dongguk Univ.; 01A also stops at Namdaemun Market (Exit 8), Sungnyemun Gate and Baekbeom Square before it reaches the tower. That means you can go from the market to the tower without passing through Myeongdong.
  • On foot. The stairs and the gentler paths, and the autumn leaves along them, are in the Namsan fall foliage and walking trail guide.

If you'd rather not climb the first stretch, the Namsan Oreumi incline elevator is free and open 09:00 to 23:00, with maintenance on Mondays from 09:00 to 14:00, on the tower's page. It covers the lower stretch only.

After dark: when should you be at N Seoul Tower?

The observatory is open every day, 10:00 to 22:30 from Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 23:00 on weekends and holidays. It stops letting people in 30 minutes before closing. An adult ticket is 29,000 won, and the tower's FAQ says you don't need a reservation. The cable car's last tickets are 22:30 for a round trip and 22:45 for one way. My advice, not an official rule: if you'll ride the cable car down, leave the observatory by about 22:00.

Everything that matters after dark is in N Seoul Tower at night: last entry, cable car, locks: the last entry, what the colours of the tower's lights mean, the love locks and how to get down late. For the tower's history and the way up in general, there is N Seoul Tower: history, hours, tickets and how to get there.

Seoul is running the Namsan Night Festival from Oct 23 to Nov 14, 2026, with booking in advance. If your day falls in those dates, read the Namsan Night Festival guide before you plan the evening.

How much does the day cost?

Transport and the tower, for one adult, my sums from the official fares:

  • Tower + cable car round trip: 29,000 + 15,000 = 44,000 won
  • Tower + bus up and down: 29,000 + 3,000 = 32,000 won
  • Subway: 1,550 won for each ride on top
Chart of what one adult pays: subway base fare 1,550 won per ride, bus 01A or 01B 1,500 won per ride, cable car round trip 15,000 won, N Seoul Tower observatory 29,000 won, observatory plus cable car round trip 44,000 won
Fares from the official pages, checked Oct 12, 2026. The last line is my own addition. Chart: Before You Go Korea

Food and shopping aren't in these numbers, because they depend on what you buy. The subway fare is the Seoul fare table's base fare; a longer trip costs more.

What if it's a Sunday?

Then Namdaemun is the stop to change. Many shops are closed, and restaurants differ one by one, so check each pin's hours first. I'd spend the morning in Myeongdong, go up in the afternoon and keep the tower for the evening. That is my suggestion, and it means the market's food alleys will have to wait for another day.

FAQ

Can you do Namsan, Myeongdong and Namdaemun in one day?

The hours fit: the market in the morning, Myeongdong at midday, and the cable car and tower open until 22:30 or 23:00. How long each stop takes is up to you, and I found no walking time between Namdaemun and Myeongdong.

What is the best order?

Namdaemun, Myeongdong, Namsan, then the tower after dark. It's my plan, based on the closing times: the market's food alleys close by 21:00 and the tower stays open the latest.

Is it possible on a Sunday?

Yes, but many Namdaemun shops are closed on Sundays, so swap the market for more time in Myeongdong or on Namsan.

Which stops on this route need a booking?

The tower observatory needs no reservation, and the cable car sells tickets on site only. The Namsan Night Festival (Oct 23 to Nov 14, 2026) needs advance booking.

How do I get from Namdaemun to N Seoul Tower?

Bus 01A stops at Namdaemun Market (Exit 8) and Sungnyemun Gate and goes on to the tower. It costs 1,500 won by transportation card.

What time should I be at the tower?

The last entry is about 22:00 on weekdays and 22:30 on weekends and holidays (30 minutes before closing, my subtraction). The night guide has the details and the way down.

Hours that could reshuffle the route

The order is my own plan, so I'll adjust it if the market, the tower or the cable car change their hours, and I'll look for a walking time between Namdaemun and Myeongdong from an official source. The longer guides for each stop will be linked from here as they go up.
