How Koreans Find Local Restaurants: Naver vs Google (2026)
Checked Sept 29, 2026

Koreans don't trust one app. They look a restaurant up on Naver Map, where most Korean reviews are, and check it against a second source such as Tmap, Kakao Map or Google Maps. Naver brought back average star ratings on July 9, 2026, but owners can hide them, and paid fake reviews are a real business here. So compare apps, and read the newest verified reviews.
Foreign visitors mostly seem to search for Korean restaurants on TripAdvisor or similar apps. When I lived in Vietnam, I noticed something: the restaurants with good TripAdvisor reviews were always full of foreigners. The real local places were tucked away in some grubby corner.

Why are TripAdvisor and Google Maps restaurants full of tourists?
Because a ranking only reflects the people who write reviews there. A place gets popular on TripAdvisor, more visitors go, and more visitors review it. That was what I saw in Vietnam, and the numbers in Korea point the same way: Koreans mostly use Korean apps.
Google Maps is closer to useful, but it has the same lean. In February 2026, Naver Map had about 29 million monthly users in Korea and Google Maps about 9.9 million (Mobile Index figures, reported by Aju Business Daily). The same report found shops courting Google reviews: a restaurant in Daegu offered a free side dish for a Google review with a photo.
That breaks Google's own rules. Its contribution policy bans reviews posted in return for payment, discounts or free goods. If you see a "review us for a free drink" sign, read that place's Google score with some doubt.
What app do Koreans actually use to find restaurants?
Naver Map (네이버 지도). It has the most Korean users and the most Korean reviews, and it works in English. Since October 2024, Naver Map translates visitor reviews into English, Chinese and Japanese, following your phone or app language (NAVER). Since June 9, 2026, visitors can also verify with a passport to use Naver bookings and Naver Pay without a Korean phone number (NAVER).
But Naver alone isn't enough. You have no choice but to find that country's own app, not Google Maps or TripAdvisor. In Korea, that app is Naver Map. The marketing there is so polished that even places with truly awful food can have high ratings. So I check a restaurant's ratings on Tmap, Naver Map and Google Maps together.
The sections below show what each app catches that the others miss.
Does Naver Map have star ratings again?

Yes, since July 9, 2026. Many English guides still say Naver has no stars. That was true from late 2021 until this summer, and it's wrong now.
- 2021: Naver swapped stars for keyword reviews (tags such as "the food is tasty"), which you can only leave after a verified visit by receipt or Naver booking. It announced the end of star ratings in October 2021.
- April 6, 2026: Naver started collecting 1 to 5 stars again. At first only the writer and the owner could see them.
- July 9, 2026: average stars went public. They combine old ratings from before October 2021 with the new ones (NAVER, June 1, 2026).
The catch: the owner decides whether the average shows. For places that opened after October 25, 2021, it's hidden unless the owner switches it on. So no stars doesn't mean a bad restaurant. And a high average is only one clue, since owners with low scores can simply keep them hidden.
Two new tools help. You can now see each reviewer's own average, so you can spot someone who gives everyone 5 stars, or everyone 1. And reviews can only be edited for 3 months after they're posted. Naver also bans handing out scores under 3 with no real explanation.
Can you trust Naver reviews?
Mostly, but not blindly. Fake reviews are sold here, and even "receipt-verified" ones can be bought.
- July 20, 2026: Busan police caught 24 people who posted 28,886 fake reviews for 707 businesses, including restaurants and cafes, between October 2020 and January 2026. They charged 700 won per receipt review and 800 won per visit review, and made about 1.9 billion won (Kukmin Ilbo). The report says "a portal" and doesn't name Naver.
- January 28, 2026: Naver said a business caught using AI-made or edited receipts, fake bookings or paid "mission" reviews gets punished on the first offence. Its reviews can be hidden, and its AI summary menu deleted for good (Newspim).
- September 2026: a bill introduced in August, reported on Sept 28, would punish review rigging with macros or fake accounts by up to 3 years in prison or a 30 million won fine (Edaily). It has not passed.
Blog reviews are the other trap. Under the Fair Trade Commission's rules, in force since December 1, 2024, a blog post written for money or a free meal has to say so in its title or first lines. So if a Naver blog review starts with 협찬 (sponsored), 체험단 (free-meal review group), 원고료 (writing fee) or 제공받아 (provided by the shop), skip it.
What is Tmap, and can tourists use it?
Tmap (티맵) is a navigation app Korean drivers use every day. It knows where drivers actually end up, and it ranks places on that, not on reviews or ads.
- Local restaurants (로컬 맛집), since November 2025: built from the trips of users who registered a home or work address. It shows where residents go, not visitors (ZDNet Korea).
- September 21, 2026: the "Where to go" (어디갈까) section got a Tmap Ranking by dish, such as gimbap or pork cutlet, plus a way to ask questions of people whose visit Tmap verified by their drive (Money Today).
For a visitor, it's hard. In July 2026, Tmap told a user on Google Play that you need a Korean mobile number or a real-name-verified T ID to log in (Google Play). It's also car data, so it favours places you drive to, not the ones you'd walk to from a subway station in central Seoul.
The workaround needs no app. The Korea Tourism Organization's local restaurant chart (현지인·외지인 맛집차트) uses the previous month's Tmap navigation data. It shows a top 10 for locals and a separate top 10 for visitors, by city and district, for Korean food, foreign food, and cafes and bakeries. The page is in Korean, so use your browser's translate button. Places that show up on the locals list but not the visitors list are the ones worth a look.
What about Kakao Map?
Kakao Map (카카오맵) is the other big Korean map, and it shows star ratings. In January 2026 its "most helpful" (도움순) sort started putting reviews with payment, booking or on-site photo proof first. You can switch to newest first (iNews24).
The app menus come in English. I couldn't confirm that it translates reviews the way Naver does. Use it as a second opinion: if Naver looks perfect and Kakao looks poor, find out why.
How do I cross-check a restaurant in 5 minutes?
- Naver Map. Search the place. If the English name finds nothing, copy the Korean name from Google Maps and paste it in. Note the number of visitor reviews against blog reviews, and the top keyword.
- Sort Naver reviews by newest. Look for receipt or booking proof. Tap a reviewer or two to see their own average. Watch for a sudden burst of similar reviews on the same days.
- Skim the blog reviews. Drop any with 협찬, 체험단 or 원고료 in the title or first lines.
- Check a second app. Kakao Map, or Google Maps. On Google, look at what language the latest reviews are in. Mostly English, Chinese or Japanese means a visitor favourite. That isn't bad, just not local.
- Outside Seoul or on a road trip, check the tourism organization's locals chart for that town.
At the door, a Korean price list on the wall, a short menu and office workers queueing at lunch are good signs. A crowd of tourists holding the same phone screen is not a bad sign, just a different one.
Once you've picked a place, you'll need its Korean name for the taxi too. My guide to Kakao T and Uber in Korea covers how to show it to the driver.
Which Korean words should I look for in reviews?
| Korean | Meaning | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 협찬 | Sponsored | The shop paid or gave something |
| 체험단 | Free-meal review group | Written in return for a free meal |
| 원고료 | Writing fee | A paid post |
| 내돈내산 | "My money, my purchase" | Claims to be unpaid. Usually true, sometimes not |
| 재방문 | Came back again | A good sign when many say it |
| 단골 | Regular customer | Locals return here |
| 웨이팅 | Queue, wait | Expect to line up |
| 바가지 | Rip-off | Overcharging complaints |
| 불친절 | Rude | Service complaints |
FAQ
Does Naver Map have star ratings in 2026?
Yes. Average stars have been public since July 9, 2026, after being dropped in 2021. The owner can hide them, so many places still show none.
Is Google Maps good for finding restaurants in Korea?
For finding the place and reading reviews in your language, yes. But many of its reviews come from visitors, so check the same place on Naver Map before you decide.
Can tourists use Tmap?
Not easily. Tmap says you need a Korean mobile number or a verified T ID to log in. The Korea Tourism Organization's locals vs visitors chart shows Tmap-based rankings on the web with no login.
Are Naver reviews fake?
Most aren't, but fake ones are sold. Police in Busan caught a group that posted 28,886 of them. Read the newest receipt-verified reviews and skip blog posts marked 협찬 or 체험단.
Can I read Naver reviews in English?
Yes. Set your phone or the app to English and Naver Map translates visitor reviews. Naver's translation covers visitor reviews; for blog posts, use a translation app.
Things I could not confirm yet:
- How many Naver places have switched their star average on. Naver hasn't published a number.
- Whether Kakao Map translates reviews into English.
- How much of Tmap shows in English. The App Store lists English, but Tmap has said before that it has no English version planned.
- Whether a passport-verified foreign Naver account can write reviews.
- Whether the Busan fake reviews were on Naver. Police only said "a portal".
- Whether the tourism organization's locals chart has an English version. I only found the Korean page.
Google Maps and TripAdvisor alone won't get you there. In Korea, the local app is Naver Map, and I still check Tmap and Google next to it.
