Gangneung is on Korea's east coast, 1 hour 31 minutes to about 2 hours 11 minutes from Seoul by KTX-Eum. A one-way ticket is 26,000 won from Cheongnyangni Station or 27,600 won from Seoul Station on the Oct 28 weekday timetable. Cheongnyangni has more trains (17 a day against 14), and the same trains stop there one stop later. A day trip works, and one night is better, because the best parts are the beach early or late in the day.
I usually go to Sokcho. When I get tired of it, I head to Goseong or Gangneung, just north and south of it, and I have been to Gangneung many times. What I like is that the lake and the sea touch each other, so if you pick your room well, one side looks over the lake and the other over the sea. The mountains are easy to climb, the temples are worth a visit, the KTX makes the trip simple, and you can even eat raw fish at Jeongdongjin. There is more to do than you can fit into one trip.

Why are more foreign visitors going to Gangneung this year?
Foreign visitor-days in Gangneung rose 35.2% from Jan 1 to Sep 23, 2026 compared with the same period of 2025, using Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) mobile-data statistics. The same data for all of Korea show a rise of 22.5%. A visitor-day counts one person for one day, so a three-day stay counts as three, and the numbers are best read as a trend, not a head count.

Not every month rose. March fell from 24,100 to 19,300, while June nearly doubled from 31,900 to 62,800. The Gangneung Danoje festival ran in June this year, which fits the jump, but the data do not say why people came, so I treat it as a possible link only. The longer-running reason is simpler: the city is under two hours from Seoul by train, and the coast is the draw.
How do I get from Seoul to Gangneung?

| Option | Time | Fare (adult, one way) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni | 1h31 to 1h50 | 26,000 won | 17 a day, first 05:27, last 22:34 |
| KTX-Eum from Seoul Station | 1h51 to 2h11 | 27,600 won | 14 a day, first 05:06, last 22:14 |
| Express bus, Seoul Express Bus Terminal | about 2h50 | 26,800 won (Udeung), 33,100 won (Premium) | 23 a day, 06:00 to 23:00 |
| Express and intercity bus, Dong Seoul Terminal | 2h20 to 2h50 | 24,300 won (Udeung), 27,300 won (Premium) | 25 a day (12 express and 13 intercity), 06:40 to 22:10 |
| Direct bus, Incheon Airport Terminal 2 | 4h15 to 4h25 | 41,000 won, 49,400 won (Premium) | 9 on Oct 23, 07:20 to 21:10 |
Train times and fares are from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's TAGO data for a weekday, Oct 28, and bus data are for Fri, Oct 23. Timetables shift with the season and the day of the week, so check the operator for your date.
- Cheongnyangni or Seoul Station? The same trains stop at both, Seoul Station first. The 06:00 from Cheongnyangni and the 05:40 from Seoul Station are the same train and both reach Gangneung at 07:44. Cheongnyangni is cheaper by 1,600 won and shorter by about 15 to 25 minutes, so use it if you are staying on the east side of Seoul. If you are near Seoul Station, boarding there is just as easy.
- Train or bus? The train fare is close to the Udeung bus fare and the ride is about 40 minutes or more shorter. The bus makes sense if you are near the Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Terminal.
- From Incheon Airport: a direct bus runs from Terminal 2 and saves you changing in Seoul (nine departures on Oct 23). The other route is AREX into Seoul, then the KTX (see my airport to Seoul guide).
For the KTX, Korail's English site (korail.com/global/eng) is the official seller, and my KTX booking guide covers the steps with a foreign card and passport. If you would rather book through an app, Trip.com lists the same route (Seoul to Gangneung KTX on Trip.com). Buses are sold at the terminal counter or on kobus.co.kr.
How do I get around Gangneung?
Gangneung Station is in the city, not at the beach, and the sights are spread along the coast. A taxi is the simplest way between the station, Gyeongpo and Anmok, and it is the best value with two or more people. Show the Korean name on your phone: Gyeongpo Beach is 경포해변, Anmok is 안목해변, Ojukheon is 오죽헌. Search the name in Naver Map to see the next bus. My Kakao T guide explains the taxi app, and the map app comparison explains why Google Maps directions are limited in Korea.
Hyangho Beach in Jumunjin, where the BTS bus stop is, is about 30 minutes by car from the station (iVisitKorea). Go by taxi or on a tour, and agree on the return trip before you set out.
What is there to do in Gangneung?

Gyeongpo Beach and Lake. A long beach with pine trees, and the lake sits right behind it. This is the spot where the lake and the sea are next to each other, which is why a room that looks at both is worth choosing. You can walk on the sand all year.

Sacheon Beach. A smaller beach north of Gyeongpo with a blue photo sign on the sand and a rock islet in the water. I took the photo above on Sept 26, 2026.
Anmok Coffee Street. A row of cafés looking straight at the beach.

Ojukheon. A Joseon-era house with a bamboo grove and a few halls. Admission is 3,000 won for adults, and the ticket includes the Gangneung City Museum next door. The grounds are open from 09:00 to 18:00 with ticket sales until 17:00, and it is open all year, though the indoor halls close on Jan 1, Seollal and Chuseok (KTO). Plan 45 to 60 minutes.
Jumunjin and Hyangho Beach. Jumunjin is the fishing port to the north. Hyangho Beach, a white-sand beach of more than 700 metres, is where the BTS bus stop is. Search 향호해변 in Naver Map.

Jeongdongjin. A seaside train station south of the city, known for sunrise. It is also a place to eat raw fish by the sea.
What should I eat in Gangneung?
I am listing foods, not restaurants, because shop hours change, and the lunch queues will point you to the good ones.
- Chodang soft tofu (초당순두부): Chodang is a neighbourhood known for soft, curd-style tofu made with seawater brine (KTO). It is served as a stew or a hotpot. Hours differ by restaurant, so aim for lunch.
- Raw fish (회): at Jumunjin and at Jeongdongjin. Ask the price before you order, whatever the place.
- Coffee: Anmok is the place for it with a view of the sea.
How long should I spend in Gangneung?
One day covers the highlights. Two days let you see the beach early or late, when it is quiet, and that is the part I would not skip.
- Take an early KTX from Cheongnyangni. The 06:00 reaches Gangneung at 07:44 and the 06:27 at 07:59.
- Taxi to Chodang for soft tofu, then walk Gyeongpo Lake and the beach.
- Coffee at Anmok, then Ojukheon in the afternoon.
- Head back in time for the evening train. The last KTX leaves Gangneung at 22:27 on the weekday timetable, and the 18:48 and 20:30 give you more margin.

For two days, stay near Gyeongpo or Anmok if the sea is the point, or near the station if you arrive late or leave early. Trip.com's list for the Gyeongpo area is a quick way to see what is open on your dates (Hotels near Gyeongpo Beach on Trip.com).
FAQ
Is Gangneung a good day trip from Seoul?
Yes. The first KTX reaches Gangneung at 07:03 and the last one back leaves at 22:27, so you can have most of a day there. One night is better if you want the beach early or late.
Which Seoul station should I use for the Gangneung KTX?
Cheongnyangni, if it is convenient. It is 1,600 won cheaper than Seoul Station, has 17 trains a day against 14, and the same trains stop there one stop later.
Is there a direct bus from Incheon Airport to Gangneung?
Yes, nine departures from Terminal 2 on Oct 23, taking about 4h15 to 4h25 for 41,000 or 49,400 won. Check which terminal your bus leaves from before you book.
How far is the BTS bus stop from Gangneung Station?
About 30 minutes by car, at Hyangho Beach in Jumunjin.

The KTX timetable, because fares and train counts change with the season, and the dates of next year's Danoje festival once the city announces them. When either changes, this page and the date at the top will change with it.
