For most first trips to Busan, sleep in the Old Town (Nampo or Busan Station) if you arrive by train or ferry or if your trip includes a Saturday night, and on the East Coast (Haeundae or Gwangalli) for the beach and for weeknights. Seomyeon is the cheapest base on weekdays. On weekdays every area costs about ₩67,000 to ₩98,000 a night for two adults; on a Saturday the East Coast and Gijang jump to ₩181,000 to ₩260,000 while the Old Town stays at ₩111,000 to ₩132,000.
In Paris, the usual advice is to pick an arrondissement before you pick a hotel. Busan works the same way, and I could not find an English map of it, so I made one from Korean government data and hotel prices. I use the same method for Seoul in Where to Stay in Seoul.
I've been to Busan four or five times, once before I got married and later with my kids. I'm not sure I'd want to live there, but as a place to visit I love it: the food, Jagalchi Market, Dongbaekseom and the subway, every time.

Jump to: The four zones · Why two zones matter · Weekday vs Saturday prices · Each zone, honestly · By arrival route · 2026 trend · FAQ
What are the four zones of Busan for visitors?
Busan is long and spread out, but visitors really use four parts of it. The rest of the city (gray on the map) is residential, with few hotels aimed at visitors.
Old Town (orange): Nampo, Jagalchi, Busan Station, Songdo, Yeongdo (남포·자갈치·부산역·송도·영도). This is where Busan started. Markets, street food, the harbor, Huinnyeoul and Gamcheon Culture Village are close by. It is also where you arrive if you come by KTX or by ferry from Japan.

Seomyeon (green): the transit hub (서면). This is downtown Busan, with shopping, nightlife and the crossing of subway Lines 1 and 2. It isn't a sightseeing area, but everything is one ride away.
East Coast (blue): Gwangalli and Haeundae (광안리·해운대). Beaches, the Gwangan Bridge at night and a lot of Busan's larger hotels. Haeundae Beach, Dongbaekseom and the Blue Line Park are here.
Gijang (blue stripes): Osiria (기장·오시리아). The resort end of the coast, with Haedong Yonggungsa temple, Lotte World Adventure Busan and large resort hotels. It is beautiful, but you will take taxis everywhere.
Why do two of those zones matter most?
Busan city's 2024 visitor survey asked 1,060 foreign visitors where they went. Almost every top spot falls in either the Old Town or the East Coast: Gwangalli 58.5%, BIFF Square 55.5%, Gamcheon Culture Village 55.2%, Gukje Market 46.9% and Haeundae 40.8%.

Between Nampo and Haeundae the subway takes roughly 50 minutes to an hour, with one change at Seomyeon (Line 1 to Line 2). Doing that once is fine. Doing it every day of a 6-day trip gets tiring, and the average foreign visitor in that survey stays 6.2 days. That is why the zone you sleep in matters more in Busan than in most cities.
How much more does a Saturday night cost in Busan?
I sampled about 25 hotel listings per area on Booking.com for each of two weekday nights (Wed 18 Nov and Wed 2 Dec 2026) and two Saturday nights (21 Nov and 5 Dec 2026). The prices are medians for 2 adults, read on Oct 23, 2026. Booking searches by landmark radius, so the Busan Station, Seomyeon, Gwangalli and Songdo samples include some hotels from neighboring areas.

On weekdays, every area lands between about ₩67,000 and ₩98,000, so the difference is small. Saturdays are different. Gwangalli goes from ₩92k to ₩229k and Gijang from ₩98k to ₩260k, because that is where Koreans go for weekend getaways too. The Old Town rises only about 1.4 to 1.6 times.
One caveat on the Saturday numbers: 21 Nov 2026 is the Saturday of G-Star, the big game show at BEXCO in Haeundae (Nov 19 to 22), so it was pricier almost everywhere. The 5 Dec Saturday on its own shows the same pattern: Gwangalli ₩84k on Wed 2 Dec against ₩214k on Sat 5 Dec, and Gijang ₩94k against ₩237k, about 2.5 times. Haeundae was milder on 5 Dec, ₩81k against ₩142k. On 21 Nov, the G-Star Saturday, Haeundae's median was ₩200k and Nampo's ₩162k, against ₩142k and ₩129k on 5 Dec.
Tip: festival and event weekends push the East Coast up the most. The Busan Fireworks Festival is listed for Saturday 7 Nov 2026 at Gwangalli Beach, Igidae and Dongbaek Island (Busan Festival Organizing Committee). I did not sample that night, so expect East Coast rooms to cost more than the charts show. If you have dates in November, check our November events guide before you book, and for events through Oct 31 see our October festivals guide.
So if your trip includes a Saturday night, that is the night to stay in the Old Town. Put your East Coast nights on weekdays.
Which zone is right for you?
Old Town: Nampo and Busan Station. Best for markets, street food, short trips, arriving by train or ferry, and Saturday nights. A weekday night is about ₩80k, a Saturday ₩111k to ₩132k. The trade-off is no beach, and the streets around Busan Station get quiet at night. Nampo is 2 stops from Busan Station on Line 1.
Nampo had a weekday median of ₩82k and a Saturday median of ₩132k in my sample, and Trip.com's list for the area is a quick way to compare what is available on your dates (Hotels near Nampo-dong on Trip.com).
Seomyeon. Best for tight budgets and getting everywhere on the subway. About ₩67k on a weekday, the cheapest of all, and ₩146k on a Saturday. The trade-off is that it is a shopping and nightlife district, so you will ride to every sight.
East Coast: Haeundae and Gwangalli. Best for beaches, the bridge at night, large hotels and families. About ₩88k to ₩92k on a weekday and ₩181k to ₩229k on a Saturday. The trade-off is that weekends are expensive and Old Town days mean the 50-minute ride. Haeundae Beach is also the end of the Haeparang Trail Course 1, a 16.9 km coastal walk from Oryukdo.
Haeundae had a weekday median of ₩88k and a Saturday median of ₩181k, and Gwangalli ₩92k and ₩229k, so these are the two lists to check on a weeknight (Hotels near Haeundae Beach on Trip.com · Hotels near Gwangalli Beach on Trip.com).
If you stay in Haeundae, Blue Line Park is the nearby add-on: about 4.8 km of coastal railway that closed in 2016 and opened as a tourist route in October 2020, running from Mipo Station toward Songjeong, per the Busan Navi tourism guide. Sky Capsule and Beach Train tickets can be booked ahead on Klook.
Gijang: Osiria. Best for a resort stay, Haedong Yonggungsa and a quiet sea view. About ₩98k on a weekday and ₩260k on a Saturday. The trade-off is that it is far from everything else, so expect taxis.
Which base fits how you arrive in Busan?
- Gimhae Airport to Haeundae or Gijang: Airport Limousine Route 1, which stops at Jangsan Station, Haeundae Beach and BEXCO and, since January 2026, at a new Dongbusan Tourism Complex stop by Osiria.
- Gimhae Airport to Seomyeon: Airport Limousine Route 2 (Seomyeon and Bujeon), adult fare ₩6,000 since Jan 5, 2026, down from ₩7,500. Or take the light rail to Sasang (about 9 minutes) and change to subway Line 2.
- Seoul by KTX: you arrive at Busan Station, in the Old Town. See KTX times and fares for Seoul to Busan and how to book KTX as a foreigner.
- Ferry from Japan: Busan Port International Passenger Terminal, also in the Old Town near Busan Station.
Once you have a base, our guides to the K-Tour Pass for Busan and to Busan attraction ticket prices, gate vs Klook cover the discounts.
Where are the crowds heading in 2026?
Foreign visits to Busan grew 43% from Jan 1 to Sep 23, 2026 against the same period of 2025, compared with 26% for Seoul, according to the Korea Tourism Organization's regional visitor data. Among the districts visitors use, the East Coast grew fastest.

Suyeong-gu, where Gwangalli is, is up 78% and Haeundae 62%. Gwangalli is no longer the quiet alternative to Haeundae, so if you want a bridge-view room on a weekend, book early.
What decides it in the end?
Busan's districts differ in what is nearby and in what a Saturday night costs. Arriving by train or ferry, start in the Old Town. Came for the sea, stay on the East Coast, ideally on weekdays. Staying a week, do both and keep the Saturday in the Old Town. Next, check G-Star week and the Nov 7 fireworks against your dates, and watch how the East Coast prices move as winter arrives.
