About the guide

Hi, I’m SeoulAslan

I’m from Korea. I lived in Vietnam for six years and in Thailand for a year, so I know what it feels like to arrive somewhere and find that the useful information is in a language you can’t read.

I hike about twice a month. When a guide comes from my own walk, I say so. When it doesn’t, it’s based on official Korean sources.

The Jeongdong Night Walk (정동야행) runs Fri Oct 30 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm and Sat Oct 31 from 2:00 to 10:00 pm around Deoksugung and Jeongdong-gil in central Seoul. Pre-registration for the guided tours closed on Oct 16, but the street side of the festival has no sign-up: a stamp tour, craft stations, a food zone, a night market and street performances. Deoksugung itself is free for everyone on both days, and the opening concert is Fri Oct 30 at 6:30 pm in front of Junghwajeon hall.

I have walked Deoksugung and Jeongdong-gil before, but it was so long ago that I can't tell you what it looked like then, so this guide runs on this year's dates and the official pages. The theme is "Jeongdong, Dressed in New Light" (정동, 새로운 빛을 입다), and the city of Jung-gu organizes it. The festival moved to autumn this year, and I read the city's festival page, the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center and the news reports to write this.

Is it too late to join the Jeongdong Night Walk?

No, but a few programs are gone. Sign-up ran from Oct 7 to Oct 16 on the festival's own website, with 30% of each program's places kept for Jung-gu residents and one companion allowed per applicant. Results went out on Oct 19. Heraldcorp lists what was on that list: a Canadian Embassy tour on Oct 30, a British Embassy tour on Oct 31, an Ewha Girls' High School interior tour, an XR experience at the Pai Chai Hakdang History Museum, a feng shui lecture, a walk themed on the poet Kim Sowol, and the guided "Let's Walk Around Jeongdong" tour. If you did not apply, plan around the rest of the festival instead of waiting at an embassy gate.

For questions, the culture policy team of Jung-gu takes calls at 02-3396-4622 and 4624.

Friday evening or Saturday afternoon: which should you pick?

Fri Oct 30Sat Oct 31
Hours6:00 to 10:00 pm2:00 to 10:00 pm
Fixed eventOpening concert, 6:30 pm, JunghwajeonNone listed in the reports

Pick Friday if the opening concert is the point. The reports name the pop-opera group Poet, the conductor Baek Yun-hak with the Ieum Orchestra, and the singer Lim Hyung-joo. Pick Saturday if you want the longer day: it runs eight hours, so you can see the buildings in daylight and then watch the lights come on. I really dislike crowds, so if I go I would be at the gate when it opens on Saturday at 2 pm.

What can you do without booking?

The news reports and the city's page describe these. None of them lists a sign-up.

  • Stamp tour. Collect 12 or more stamps from the facilities and performance venues and you get a souvenir. You do not have to join the guided walk to do it.
  • Craft stations on the stone-wall road. The reports list night-view drawing, acrylic mood lamps and coffee-grounds crafts; the city's page lists mother-of-pearl boxes and roof-tile rubbings.
  • Food zone in Jeongdong Park. About 20 restaurants nearby also run festival discounts.
  • Moonlight Market (달빛장터). A craft and art market along Jeongdong-gil.
  • Street and stage shows. Busking along the stone-wall road, plus performances at Jeongdong First Methodist Church, the Anglican Cathedral of Seoul, the Salvation Army Seoul First Church, Jungmyeongjeon and the National Jeongdong Theater. Reports list organ and brass music, magic, jazz, rope-walking and taekkyeon.
  • Lights. A media facade on the outer wall of the Pai Chai Hakdang History Museum, a neon photo spot near the roundabout, a lantern photo spot in Jeongdong Park and an LED display of Jung-gu's night-lighting plan.

In all, 34 historic and cultural sites open late, among them Deoksugung, Jungmyeongjeon, the Pai Chai Hakdang History Museum and the churches above. Deoksugung is free for everyone from Oct 29 to Nov 15; our Seoul palaces free entry guide has the closing days. On an ordinary day the palace is open 9:00 am to 9:00 pm with last entry at 8:00 pm, and the regular adult ticket is 1,000 won.

In what order should you walk it?

This is my suggested route, not an official one. It follows the geography: start at the palace gate, then follow the wall west onto Jeongdong-gil.

List of four stops in a suggested walking order: Deoksugung with the opening concert, the stone-wall road with drawing, lamps and busking, Jeongdong-gil with the moonlight market and churches, and Jeongdong Park with the food zone and lantern photo spot
A walking order for the night. Chart: Before You Go Korea
  1. Deoksugung. Enter early on Friday for the 6:30 pm concert in front of Junghwajeon, or on Saturday for the buildings in daylight. Last entry is 8:00 pm on a normal day.
  2. The stone-wall road (덕수궁 돌담길). Craft stations and busking along the wall.
  3. Jeongdong-gil. The Moonlight Market, the churches and the Pai Chai Hakdang media facade.
  4. Jeongdong Park. Finish with dinner at the food zone and the lantern photo spot.

How do you get to Jeongdong?

Take the subway. Deoksugung's own directions give City Hall Station (시청역), Line 1 or 2, Exit 2, about 2 minutes on foot. From Gwanghwamun Station (광화문역, Line 5), Exit 2 or 6 is about 10 minutes away. The nearest bus stop is "Sichung-ap · Deoksugung" (시청앞·덕수궁), served by lines 103, 150, 401, 402 and 406. Deoksugung has no parking, so leave the car.
